The following is the overall syllabus for UvA Talen Arabic 2, April-June 2023, DL3205. Note that the syllabus is approximate; it was copied from any earlier course and may change somewhat. Furthermore, the children’s book mentioned will most likely be replaced with new materials I am developing.
There is no lesson on either 10 April (Paasmaandag) or 29 May (2e Pinksterdag).
Please write to your instructor if for some reason you cannot attend class.
ُُُThe dates for the resits for this course will be announced later. All resits are conducted online via Zoom. The students need to sign up by email at <trainers@uvatalen.nl> for one of these options.
Please try to miss as few classes as possible. NOTE: UvA Talen’s rule is that you cannot miss more than two classes to be eligible for the final exam.

Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 4: Watch the video described at the bottom of page 48. All videos for the book can be found here.
Prepare Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 5: Read explanations on pages 63 and 64. Learn vocabulary on pages 65–66.
Prepare Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 6: Read explanations and learn vocabulary on pages 81–82. The prepositions introduced in the vocabulary are also displayed graphically on page 78.
Write out your answers to Unit 6, Exercise 10, p. 79. Scan it or take a picture of it an send it to your instructor for feedback. This exercise is good preparation for one of the questions on the final exam.
Finish off Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 6, doing exercises 11 and 12. Do exercise 10 on a separate sheet of paper, with your name on top, and hand it in to your teacher next week.
Prepare Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 7: Read the Arabic on page 83. Read all of the explanations, and learn the vocabulary.
In Mastering Arabic, Unit 7, exercise 6, on p. 91, reference is made to ابن سينا, known in the West by his Latin name Avicenna. You can read more about this historical figure, sometimes called “the father of modern medicine”, on Wikipedia in English or in Dutch.
Do exercises 10 and 11 in Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 8. You do not need to hand these assignments in to your teacher. Remember that there is an answer key in the back of the book if you get stuck.
Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 9: Read all the explanations. Familiarize yourself with the countries on the first page and those listed in the vocabulary section. Learn the vocabulary after the nationalities in the vocabulary section.
Reread أنا وأخي. Next time we may do an activity using the new vocabulary.
Reread the conversation in Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 10, on page 126. Also do the exercise on page 130, which you have to think about and then do with the audio. You may practise this in class live with a partner.
Prepare Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 11: Read the explanations and learn the vocabulary.

Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 11: Read the conversation on page 143; next time we may practise this as in the pink box on the same page. Do exercises 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11.
Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 12: We have read through the bubbles exercise 4 in class; now work through the audio portion, putting the bubbles in the correct order. Also do the video exercise on page 164. (You are a productive group. We actually did all of this in class.)
Prepare Mastering Arabic 1, Unit 13: Read the explanations and learn the vocabulary.
